双语工作记忆和二语水平对跨语言句法启动效应的影响

摘要:

本研究通过两项实验考察双语工作记忆和二语水平对跨语言句法启动效应的影响。实验结果表明:1)二语水平对由母语到二语方向的跨语言句法启动存在显著的直接影响,即二语水平越高,母语句法表征的启动力越容易受到抑制,启动量就越小。这一结果验证了先前研究的发现。2)二语水平对跨语言句法启动效应还存在间接影响,即通过调节双语工作记忆对启动过程的影响,进而对启动量产生影响。但只有当二语水平达到一定的阈限时,工作记忆对跨语言句法启动的影响才能够被观察到。具体来说,当二语水平足够高时,二语工作记忆越高,母语句法表征的启动力越容易受到抑制,启动量就越小;而当二语水平足够低时,母语工作记忆越高,母语句法表征的启动力越容易得到促进,启动量就越大。

Abstract:

This paper reports two experiments that investigate the impact of working memory and second language proficiency on cross-language priming effects. Results show that (1) L2 proficiency significantly impacts the crosslanguage priming from L1 to L2, i.e., higher proficiency in L2 tends to inhibit the priming force of L1 syntactic representation more as has been revealed by previous studies, and that (2) the impact of L2 proficiency (only when it reaches certain thresholds) on the priming is mediated by L1 and L2 working memories. To be more specific, when L2 proficiency is higher than a certain threshold, better L2 working memory can inhibit the priming force of L1 syntactic representation; however, when L2 proficiency is lower than a certain threshold, better L1 working memory can strengthen the priming force of L1 syntactic representation.
