Abstract:

Description and reference are the basic expressive functions that an NP serves. An NP can be used for descriptive purpose or referential purpose,and its referential meaning varies in different syntactic situations. To account for the semantic motivation of these phenomena, this paper puts forward a hypothesis,namely, the Hypothesis of Conceptual Orientation of Lexeme (HCOL),coupled with the Selective Principle of Conceptual Orientation of Lexeme (SPCOL). Firstly,we argue that any word can be analyzed in terms of its conceptual orientation (CO),a feature that the word has when it projects itself to the concept symbolized by itself.Secondly,we propose a dichotomy of the conceptual orientation of lexeme,i.e.,intension-oriented and extension-oriented,to analyze the conceptual structure of words reflected by their static semantic structure.When a lexeme is used dynamically in a sentence,only one of its COs,either intension or extension,is selected,with the CO selection operator confining the selection of CO in the sentence. It is posited that the difference in CO selection leads to the difference in the expressive function that a noun serves in the sentence,and the referential type and the manifestation of its referential meaning are also strictly constrained by the CO selection.
