The developmental trajectory of unbalanced bilinguals’ L2 syntactic representations: Evidence from structural priming

摘要: 本文报道两项结构启动实验,分别考察成人学习者二语和跨语结构启动效应随二语水平变化的趋势,探究二语抽象句法表征和双语句法共享表征的发展顺序。二语内启动实验结果显示,从初级到高级水平的中国成人英语学习者仅在动词重复条件下产生了显著的结构启动效应,且词汇加强效应随二语水平提高而增强;从母语到二语的跨语启动实验结果显示,虽然受试的二语水平与二语内实验相当,却在高水平段表现出显著的跨语结构启动效应。跨实验综合分析表明,二语抽象句法表征和双语共享表征可能是同步发展的,不支持二语句法发展模型关于二者存在先后顺序的预测。

Abstract: This paper reports two structural priming experiments which investigated the developmental trajectory of unbalanced Chinese-English bilinguals’ L2 syntactic representations. The within-L2 (English) priming experiment found that significant structural priming occurred under the verb repetition condition only and that the magnitude of lexical boost strengthened with the increase of L2 proficiency. In the crosslinguistic (Chinese-English) priming experiment, high-proficiency participants showed reliable structural priming though their counterparts in the within-L2 experiment didn’t demonstrate any abstract priming effect. Taken together, these results suggest that contrary to the predictions of the L2 syntactic development model (Hartsuiker & Bernolet 2017), abstract L2 syntactic representations and shared representations between L1 and L2 may develop simultaneously rather than sequentially.
