中国英语学习者对英语空宾语结构的习得——语篇、语义与句法接口的视角

摘要:

本研究从语篇、语义与句法接口的视角考察中国英语学习者对英语空宾语结构的习得。分属三个水平组的90名中国学生和24名英语本族语人士参加了本研究。调查工具为句子纠错任务。研究结果显示,受试对符合语篇、语义条件的句子的接受程度显著高于违反语篇、语义条件的句子,对习惯句的接受程度显著高于事件句。由此我们得出如下结论:第一,空宾语习得不是单纯的句法习得问题,学习者对英语空宾语句的语义和语篇限制条件均有一定认知。第二,语篇突出是一个层级概念,不同程度的语篇突出对受试判断空宾语句有不同程度的影响。第三,空宾语的习得是一个渐进的过程,语义、语篇因素对不同水平的英语学习者有不同的影响。第四,主语宾语习得中的不对称现象一定程度上是由二语输入中空主语句与空宾语句的不对称造成的。

Abstract:

The present study,within the framework of interface between discourse,semantics and syntax,investigates the acquisition of English null object construction by Chinese learners of English.90 Chinese learners of English at three proficiency levels and 24 native speakers of English participated in the study.An Error Correction Task (ECT) was developed to elicit L2 learner behavior.The results reveal that the subjects were more inclined to accept null object sentences compatible with the discourse and semantic constraints than those violating these constraints,and that they were more inclined to accept habitual sentences than episodic sentences.Based on the above observation four conclusions are drawn.First,L2 acquisition of English null object construction does not merely suggest acquisition of its syntactic properties.It also entails acquisition of its discourse and semantic constraints.Second,discourse prominence is a hierarchical notion and different degree of discourse prominence exerts different impact upon L2 learner behavior.Third,L2 acquisition of English null object construction is an incremental process in which semantic and discourse factors play a differential role upon learners with different English proficiency.And finally,the asymmetry in L2 acquisition of English null subjects and null objects is partially due to the asymmetrical distribution of null subject and null object in L2 positive input.
