Abstract: The present study investigates Chinese EFL learners’ processing of English intransitive verbs by using eye-tracking technology. The results reveal that: 1) the high proficiency EFL learners show no differences in their early processing of core and peripheral intransitives, the low proficiency EFL learners perform faster in their early processing of peripheral unergatives than in that of core unergatives. In late and integrated processing, both the high and low proficiency groups perform faster in their processing of core unaccusatives than in that of peripheral unaccusatives. 2) Both the high and low proficiency groups have more difficulties in their early and late processing of intransitives in locative inversion constructions, and in their integrated processing of intransitives in the there-insertion constructions. 3) The high proficiency group outperform the low proficiency group in their early processing of core unaccusatives and in their late and integrated processing of the peripheral unergatives. 4) Comparing with intransitives’ semantic prominence, derivation complexity of the sentence structure has a greater effect on the late processing of intransitives. The results provide supportive evidence for the psychological reality of intransitives’ semantic hierarchy and syntactic complexity in L2 processing.
