题元分配一致性假设:质疑与反思

UTAH: Its flaws and solutions

摘要: 题元分配一致性假设不但在句法理论的演变过程中发挥过重要作用,而且其核心思想在当前的句法分析中也很重要。本文通过来自四种语言(汉语、英语、阿拉伯语、莫霍克语)的语料所组成的综合性论据,指出该假设存在两个根本性问题:1)它在当代句法理论中不但不必要而且会造成冗余;2)无法解释许多跨语言现象。结论是:根据该假设将语言中的词分解成更小句法成分的操作,虽是当前句法及句法-词法界面分析的主流,但研究者应对此持更加审慎的态度,是否分解应基于具体语料并进行严格论证。

Abstract: The core idea of UTAH played an important role in the development of syntactic theories, and in effect it still does to this day. Our work here addresses two fundamental problems UTAH suffers based on the substantial arguments from four languages including Chinese, English, Arabic and Mohawk: UTAH not only creates redundancy in theory formulation, but also proves to be dispensable in current syntactic theories. Over the years, extensive counterexamples have been found crosslinguistically. Confronted with these problems, any syntactic operations concerning decomposing a word into smaller parts in the spirit of UTAH deserve rigorous justification.
